Ep 10: Talkin’ Broadway Black w/ Creator, Drew Shade

Updated: Apr 18, 2018

Andrew Shade is the Founder and Editorial Director of Broadway Black, an online platform which is dedicated to highlighting the achievements and successes of African-American theatre artists on and off the Broadway stage.

I first encountered this platform in 2016 when many artists in the theatre community) were lamenting the closing of Shuffle Along and questioning the reasons given for the closing of this show. I was pleasantly surprised to encounter a voice speaking out so strongly about this and other issues concerning, specifically, Black actors.

As it turns out, Drew moved to NYC having already started working on this platform while living at home in Indiana. At the time it was a passion and hobby that he was working to build while he was auditioning and pursuing his own career as a performer. His goal was to break into the theatre business in a different way, not just by pounding the audition pavement. But in his own words “God had other plans” and he had to make a difficult decision to nudge his own career out of the forefront of his life and focus solely on building Broadway Black.

Listen in as he shares more about his goals for the platform, his love for theatre, how his experiences as a college student put him on a quest to find material that he could relate to, and how he’s steering Broadway Black in the direction of being a trusted media outlet and strong voice for the Black theatre community. He also shares life-changing and encouraging moments with some of our stars, Tonya Pinkins and Billie Porter.
